Take urgent action now to make schools safe again, MP tells govt

KUALA LUMPUR: Drastic steps must be taken and heads must roll to make schools safe again in the wake of recent acts of violence and sexual assault, says Yeo Bee Yin (PH-Puchong).

Yeo, a mother, said she was deeply distressed after learning that a Form Four schoolgirl was stabbed to death by a 14-year-old male schoolmate on Tuesday (Oct 14).

"This incident occurred just a week after the gang rape incident at a school in Melaka.

"I feel very sad and disappointed that these cases could happen in our schools. This is madness," Yeo told the Dewan Rakyat during her Budget 2026 debate speech on Tuesday.

She called for the government to take immediate stern action on those involved in the tragic incident or risk leaving the next generation to pay the price.

"Many parents out there, including myself... are now wondering if our schools are still safe for our children.

"Heads must roll, as it is clear we can no longer afford to be lenient towards any officials or people involved in these criminal cases, or it will be our children who will pay the price and be hurt in the future.

"The most important thing now is that the executive, especially the Education Ministry, must act quickly to make our schools safe again, for the sake of our children," she added.

Yeo, who is also the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Women, Children and Community Development chair, said she would summon the Education Ministry and police to a special session on school safety issues.

Tuesday's fatal stabbing comes just days after another female student was reported on Saturday (Oct 11) to be suffering from severe mental trauma after she was allegedly raped and recorded on video by four senior students on Oct 2.
