HEADS turned as the model strode down the runway in a flowing pleated ensemble adorned with a striking rickshaw motif.
The room fell silent, broken only by hushed whispers of admiration.
The look was among many standout creations that captivated audiences at this year's KL Fashion Week (KLFW), where designers reimagined Malaysian identity through contemporary silhouettes, textures and craftsmanship.
For one week, Suria KLCC became the beating heart of Malaysian fashion, as more than 50 designers and labels showcased their latest collections during KLFW's 14th edition held from Aug 3 to 9.
Themed "Destination: Home Ground", this year's fashion edition spotlighted local heritage and culture, from the contemporary elegance of Fiziwoo to the avant-garde presentations of Huntilanak, and eco-couture creations of Hatta Dolmat.
Fashion with a Malaysian soul
Since 2024, Suria KLCC has played host to the prestigious fashion event, signalling its continued commitment to promoting Kuala Lumpur alongside fashion capitals such as Milan, Tokyo or New York, its chief executive officer Francis Tan said.
"These cities [Milan, Tokyo, New York], they don't become a fashion city just after one or two years of promoting the city. That is why we want to keep doing it and make it a yearly event. “
Leveraging its role as one of the country's premier retailing destinations, and the momentum of Visit Malaysia 2026, Tan shared that fashion shows incorporating Malaysia's heritage and culture offer visitors an introduction to the country's rich traditions while giving locals a chance to reconnect with them.
The presence of KLFW at the mall has also created a unique fashion moment, where attendees come not only to see the latest collections but also to be seen, Tan added.
Dressing up has become part of the experience, with fashion-forward guests emerging as trendsetters in their own right.

Supporting local fashion
Echoing KLFW's spirit of celebrating local fashion, the mall has long championed the growth and development of homegrown talent.
"While the mall is home to international luxury brands, we also give local fashion labels prominent space.
"We want to nurture them and ensure they have the opportunity to share the same platform as international luxury brands," Tan shared.
Sofia Iman is one of many shining examples. The local label started as a small kiosk before growing into a full-fledged boutique within the mall. Its defining moment came last year when the brand was selected to open KLFW.
The support extends beyond the annual showcase.
"Once fashion week is over, we want to continue engaging with designers and see what inspires them.
"We want to see more local fashion talent grow, not just in terms of creativity, but also in terms of business growth," Tan added.
In line with that vision, KLFW together with Suria KLCC also partnered with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry for the "Jom Beli Produk Malaysia" initiative to help local designers reach wider markets.
The collaboration extended beyond providing a runway venue, with the mall's team working closely with KLFW founder Andrew Tan to explore ways to deepen local participation and elevate the overall experience.
The partnership also encouraged greater involvement from the mall's retail partners, including homegrown jewellery brand Tomei, which added sparkle to the showcase as the event's official jewellery partner.
For every Malaysian
This year's opening showcase, handpicked by Suria KLCC, saw another of its tenants take centre stage: RR by Rizman Ruzaini.
The brand had previously presented their couture line at KLFW, under the Rizman Ruzaini label, but this year it debuted their ready-to-wear collection as RR by Rizman Ruzaini.
Models strode down the runway in flowing silks, structured denim, luxurious velvet and intricate glittering embellishments.
The fashion pieces carried the beca (rickshaw) and wheels motif, blending heritage and modern sophistication that showcases the brand's signature refined aesthetic.
The latest collection of the brand, titled "Heritage in Motion", weaves the iconic Malaysian beca into its design, with its turning wheels representing the enduring journey of the nation's heritage and culture.
Reimagining the Melaka icon through a contemporary lens, the collection translates the beca's graceful curves, structural lines and intricate craftsmanship into elegant motifs, paying tribute to the artisan who built the cultural symbol.
The collection is also a continuation of the brand's longstanding tradition of drawing inspiration from Malaysia's rich cultural iconography.
"Our previous collection was inspired by the local flora and fauna, and this year, we created a collection inspired by the becа because it is very relatable to Malaysian culture," shares the brand's co-founder Rizman Nordin.
"It is also something out of the box as compared to the more commonly used imagery of batik and songket."

A defining feature of the collection was the famed RR monogram, the brand's signature detail, which was embroidered and embossed across selected fashion pieces.
Evoking the timeless appeal of monogrammed designs from international fashion houses, the RR imagery has become a recognisable symbol of the brand – designed by Malaysians, for Malaysians.
"Our label is all about branding. You can see that almost every single piece carries the Rizman Ruzaini branding. That's something we're very proud of," said Rizman.
This distinct identity was on full display as many audience members were dressed in RR creations, underscoring the brand's loyal following.
Opening KLFW is a significant recognition for the brand's founders and marks the beginning of a closer collaboration with the mall, shared Rizman.
This milestone follows a major breakthrough for the designer duo – Rizman and co-founder Ruzaini Jamil – who fulfilled a career-long dream of opening their first boutique in Suria KLCC with the RR label in 2025, after almost two decades in the industry.
"At the end of the day, brand trust is very important, and having a space in Suria KLCC means your brand is trusted."
The boutique houses the label's ready-to-wear collection, offering a premium shopping experience that reflects the brand's signature craftsmanship and contemporary elegance.
The ready-to-wear line is designed for the local market, as Rizman put it, as "a gift to Malaysians", created to encourage Malaysians to embrace homegrown brands, while the couture line is geared for the international market.
Beyond the runway
The fashion experience extended beyond the runway throughout Suria KLCC by bringing elements of the fashion week closer to shoppers and visitors.
From the batik-inspired exterior of the event venue to the striking installations by Rizman Ruzaini at the mall entrances, the space reflected the fusion of fashion, heritage and local identity.
Shoppers were able to redeem a limited-edition tote bag designed by the designers to commemorate the occasion, complete with a unique RR charm featuring the Twin Towers in its design.
Extending the experience further, the mall livestreamed the shows on a large digital screen placed outside the KLFW tent, allowing shoppers and tourists alike to be part of the momentous event.
Fittingly, the 14th KLFW opened with an electrifying performance by homegrown boyband Alpha, setting the tone for a celebration of Malaysian creativity that extended from music to fashion.
These elements transformed the event from an exclusive runway showcase into an immersive fashion experience.
