Ipoh siblings bag grand prize in draw after settling first assessment for Meru Raya house

IT WAS the first time the Looi sisters were paying the assessment tax for their new home in Meru Raya, Ipoh.

Their payment qualified them to enter a lucky draw by the Ipoh City Council for ratepayers without arrears.

Auditor Looi Pooi Pooi, 32, said she was surprised to win the grand prize – a Proton Saga worth about RM38,000.

“We received a letter to attend the lucky draw but doubted its authenticity,” she said after the event.

“My sister Phooi Leng and I came to see what prizes we would win but never expected it would be the car,” she said, adding that she and her three sisters were joint homeowners.

After receiving the mock key from mayor Zamakshari Hanipah at the Ipoh Convention Centre, Pooi Pooi said, “It still feels so surreal.”

The second and third prizes were motorcycles, won by Lee Kam Chong and P. Logalingam respectively.

The lucky draw by the city council was to encourage ratepayers to pay their assessment tax in full for the year.

Other prizes included a TV, refrigerator, laptop, electrical appliances and cash. The total prize pool was worth about RM106,000.

In his speech, Zamakhshari said the city council collected about RM71mil this year from 128,865 ratepayers.

“The collection has increased by 4%, compared to 2025 with 123,329 accounts with a total of RM68.6mil. – By IVAN LOH
