TWO lacquered wooden benches by a pedestrian crossing in Penang’s Pulau Tikus are offering respite to tired visitors.
Placed beside the traffic lights along Jalan Cantonment, they give people – many of whom are senior citizens lugging groceries – a place to sit while waiting to cross the busy road linking the market with nearby shops and homes.
Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo dubbed them the “Forrest Gump benches”, inspired by the bus-stop scenes from the Oscar-winning film starring Tom Hanks.
“We want to make our neighbourhood more walkable.
“Urban development is not only about major infrastructure projects.
“Even something as simple as benches can encourage people to slow down, rest and enjoy the surroundings.
“By adding community- friendly amenities, we hope to build a healthier urban space,” he said.
Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Koay Gaik Kee said this particular pedestrian traffic light often required a longer waiting time due to heavy traffic and the need for the lights to synchronise with the large junction nearby, leaving pedestrians standing for some time.
“They can now take a rest there,” she said, adding that the benches were made from recycled wood and funded by MBPP.
Nearby eatery owner HL Chee said the benches were particularly welcomed by those returning from the market.
“They sometimes have to wait quite a long time before the light turns green, and it is tiring especially when carrying groceries,” said Chee.
