Batu Tiga flood mitigation project ready by July

An RM8mil flood mitigation project in Taman Batu Tiga, Shah Alam, is 97% complete.

Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim said the project included a flood wall, wider drains, onsite detention features and a pump house to discharge excess water during heavy rainfall.

He said the works were aimed at addressing flash floods along Lorong Intan 1 – an area next to a Sungai Damansara tributary.

“The remaining works mainly involve connecting the electricity supply,” he said during a site visit.

“The project is expected to be completed in July,” he added.

Izham said the low-lying area was prone to flash floods when heavy rain caused the riverbanks to overflow.

The flood wall was designed based on a 50-year Average Recurrence Interval (ARI), which he said was appropriate for a tributary and internal drainage system.

Larger rivers were designed to a higher 200-year ARI standard, he elaborated.

“For a tributary like this, a 50-year ARI is sufficient.

“If possible, we would aim for a 100-year or even 200-year ARI standard, but the cost implications are very high.”

Izham said the pump house was equipped with two screw pumps with a capacity of 2,000 cubic metres per second, which could continue operating even with debris present in the water.

“The advantage of a screw pump is that it can still operate even when there is debris in the water.

“Some other pump systems can get jammed,” he explained.

He said the Taman Batu Tiga project, which began in 2023, was one of several mitigation works being carried out at flood hotspots.

“There are several more projects, and we will from time to time announce the completed flood mitigation works.”

He said a nearby project in the Batu Tiga KTM Station area, which had also experienced flooding, used a similar pump-house concept.

Izham said he would also engage Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) on flood hotspots, including Jalan 223 and areas near Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara.

“We are looking at temporary and long-term measures to address these flooding issues.

“We cannot eliminate it completely, but we will do what we can to minimise the impact,” he added.
