PETALING JAYA: The government has allocated RM44.5mil to implement 30 flood mitigation projects in flood-prone areas around Petaling Jaya and Damansara, with works now under way, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said the flood mitigation works were approved under a cost-sharing arrangement between the Federal Government and the Selangor government.
He added that all relevant agencies had approved the projects, which are now in the implementation stage.
“Over the past two years, during Budget discussions, we agreed that the funding would be shared equally between Putrajaya and the state government.
"This is to address the flash flood issue around Petaling Jaya and Damansara, where 30 mitigation projects have been approved,” he said in his speech at the PKR Youth ‘Generasi Muda Suara Baharu’ programme on Friday (July 24).
Anwar also dismissed claims that the government had cut development allocations for Petaling Jaya and Damansara, saying that funding for schools, places of worship, drainage and other public projects remained intact.
However, he clarified that such allocations would no longer be channelled through Members of Parliament (MPs).
He added that areas including Taman Medan and Bukit Gasing, as well as the parliamentary constituencies of Petaling Jaya and Subang, would continue to receive previously approved projects.
Anwar said RM1.6mil remained available for projects in the Subang parliamentary constituency, while Petaling Jaya had RM3mil in approved allocations.
“Listen carefully. I have not reduced allocations for the people, whether for mosques, temples, shops, drains, schools or anything else.
“Those allocations remain. The only thing we are not doing is channelling the funds through the MPs. If you do not support the government, then practice corporate social responsibility (CSR)," he said.
