KUALA LUMPUR: The Sungai Pinang flood mitigation project in Jelutong, Penang, is expected to be completed by September next year, says Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad.
As of September, the first phase of the Sungai Pinang Basin Flood Mitigation Plan had reached 50.86% physical progress, he said.
The project, carried out by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), aims to reduce flood risks in Jelutong and surrounding areas.
It involves widening and deepening Sungai Pinang, building drains and weir structures, upgrading drainage outfalls, and constructing bridges and pump houses, as well as land acquisition.
“The project is expected to improve the capacity of Sungai Pinang and the existing drainage system, and reduce flood risks in the Sungai Pinang basin,” Abdul Rahman said in a written reply in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Oct 19).
He was responding to RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong), who asked when the project would be fully completed.
While the project is under way, Abdul Rahman said the ministry, through the DID, is carrying out short-term mitigation works under the river conservation project to reduce flood risks.
The works include river realignment, riverbank stabilisation and upgrades to drains and related structures.
A total of RM8mil has been allocated for the programme in Penang this year, of which RM450,000 is for approved works in the Jelutong parliamentary constituency.
The works in Jelutong are expected to be completed by December this year.
