OVER 150 pupils of SK Sentosa Sibu in Sarawak received free prescription spectacles under the Vision For Future 2.0 programme.
Organised by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Mandarin Sibu, the programme aims to ensure children from financially disadvantaged families have access to proper eye care and corrective eyewear.
It provided eye screenings for 551 pupils, among whom 152 were identified as needing spectacles.
The eyewear were fitted with anti-blue light lenses for extra protection for youngsters who increasingly rely on digital screens for learning.
Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said good eyesight was essential to a child’s education, confidence and development.
“Preventable eyesight problems should not become a barrier to learning, particularly for children from B40 and underprivileged families who may struggle to afford eye exams and prescription spectacles,” he said.
JCI Mandarin Sibu president Simon Tiong said Vision For Future 2.0 reflected the organisation’s commitment to the community.
He said the programme prioritised children from B40 households because financial constraints often meant immediate household expenses were prioritised over eye exams and spectacles.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to see clearly, learn with confidence and pursue their aspirations regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.
“By restoring a child’s vision, we are also opening the door to better education, improved quality of life and a stronger future for our community,” Tiong said.
Also present were SK Sentosa senior assistant for student affairs Mohaya Sahni, JCI Mandarin Sibu legal adviser and former president Boston Ho and organising chairman Jerry Kiing.
