Diverse crowds unite at Batu Caves

KUALA LUMPUR: The lively and colourful Thaipusam festival in Batu Caves was not merely a religious event for Hindu devotees, but a gathering of all Malaysians to celebrate the nation’s diversity.

Many who came were enthralled by the festive atmosphere, which was further charged by the rhythm of lively urumi melam drum beats and devotional music in the background.

Among those participating in the devotional rites was a local Chinese woman, who wanted to be known only as Chong.

The 48-year-old from Ampang, Selangor, who was spotted carrying a paal kudam, said this was her first time making the milk offering although she had come to witness the festivities in previous years.

“I pray to Lord Muruga as I believe he has helped me and looked out for me in times of trouble,” said the car salesperson.

Tourist Eric Verschuren from the Netherlands said it was his first time witnessing Thaipusam and was amazed by the festival.

“It’s amazing to see the sacrifices and offerings of the devotees, particularly those carrying large kavadis with pierced bodies,” he said.

Japanese student Sotaro Masaki said this was his first time he attended Thaipusam festival although he has been in the country for the past 11 years.

“I am currently studying here but had not attended any local cultural festivals. It is great to witness these amazing scenes as we don’t experience this in Japan,” he said.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh who was present at the celebration said Thaipusam is not only a religious event for Hindus but also a testament to the cultural diversity and harmony enjoyed by all Malaysians.

He said the spirit of unity is further evident in the diverse crowd that gathered for the celebration, including locals and tourists alike, which is a boon for the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
