KLANG: Over a thousand “toys” in a container have been seized by the Customs Department. However, these were not teddy bears or toy trucks – instead, they were all sex toys.
The container was seized at the North Port Free Zone in Port Klang and found to contain 1,240 sex toys, as well as other items.
The value of the seized sex toys is estimated to be around RM52,500.
Selangor Customs Department Director Noraidah Ishak said the container arrived in Malaysia on May 21 from another Asian country.
Investigations are still underway to locate the intended recipient of the shipment.
“The items in the container were falsely declared as chairs, waist bags, stainless steel tumblers and underwear to avoid detection,” she said.
Noraidah added that this was the state department’s first haul of such contraband this year.
“We believe the items were intended for the local market,” she told a press conference at the department headquarters here yesterday.
In a related matter, over RM40mil in contraband items has been detected after containers of illegal alcohol, cigarettes and waste were seized by the department in three separate operations.
The first incident saw a total of 57 containers with illegal wastes seized within the first half of the year.
“Checks showed that 13 containers had 351,185kg of metal scrap and 44 containers held 841,552.50kg of plastic scrap. All containers had no import permits,” Noraidah said.
The waste scraps were estimated to be valued at around RM5mil, including the relevant duties and taxes.
Investigations showed that the consignment was listed as copper concentrate and aluminium materials.
Another case saw the seizure of a container containing 1,578 litres of liquor that were hidden inside a consignment of auto parts.
“Together with the unpaid duties, the alcohol was estimated to be worth RM409,917,” Noraidah said, adding that the container had arrived at Port Klang on April 27.
The third incident saw eight containers seized on June 3 and June 10 where the department found 48.78 million cigarettes.
“The cigarettes were estimated to be valued at RM37,560,600 when added with duties and taxes,” she said.
