AYER KEROH: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived at the PKR National Congress here on Saturday(Aug 15).
It was a rather quiet start, as the party president, who had just undergone surgery, made his way into the hall at around 8.12am.
Donning a light blue Baju Melayu, also known as the PKR blue, Anwar was accompanied by PKR Advisory Council chairman and his wife, Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
The party congress comes at a time when PKR is grappling with the departure of former leaders, losing three parliamentary seats due to the resignations of former MPs, and a streak of dismal showings in the recent Negri Sembilan and Johor state elections.
The congress also comes at a time when PKR awaits another crucial decision by its partner in Pakatan Harapan, DAP, which will vote tomorrow on whether to remain in the government.
Among many things, the congress is also set to vet the party’s performance in the recent elections and prepare for the upcoming polls.
The party's deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar will also take a leave of absence after the congress. Vice President Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will assume her duties in the interim.
Party sources, meanwhile, said Saifuddin's challenge will be connecting with the grassroots and rebuilding party members' morale.
