Security at Batu Caves during Thaipusam under control, says IGP

GOMBAK: Security during the Thaipusam celebrations at Batu Caves remains under control, with no major incidents reported.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said Ops Palu, which began on Jan 30 and runs until Feb 3, involves about 1,400 policemen deployed on a 24-hour basis.

“So far, the incidents reported have been minor and are well under control, and we have taken the necessary measures,” he said at a press conference at Batu Caves on Sunday (Feb 1).

Khalid said the Batu Caves area has been divided into four zones, namely Zones A, B, C and D, to facilitate security operations, with each shift involving more than 400 policemen.

In addition to the police, security operations are supported by 275 members from various agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Department, the Malaysian Red Crescent and the Public Works Department.

Meanwhile, police estimate that around 1.4-1.5 million devotees will gather at Batu Caves to take part in this year’s Thaipusam celebrations.

Khalid also praised the public's cooperation and the strong commitment shown by security personnel, including assistance from traffic contingents from Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Perak, in ensuring smooth traffic flow throughout the festive period.
