Hindu community integral part of Melaka's history, says CM in Thaipusam messsage

MELAKA: Thaipusam is not merely a religious observance but a meaningful reminder of unity, compassion and mutual respect that binds Melaka's multicultural society, says Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

In his Thaipusam message, the Melaka Chief Minister said the state government remains committed to upholding harmony among its diverse ethnic and religious communities, stressing that unity must be protected from negative narratives and divisive influences.

"We don't want any negative perceptions or comments from outside Melaka to disrupt the unity we have built over generations," he said, adding that social media should be used as a platform to unite society rather than sow discord.

Ab Rauf said the Hindu community has long been an integral part of Melaka's history, contributing to the state's growth since the Melaka Sultanate era.

"Later, during the British colonial period, people from the Indian subcontinent came to this state, bringing with them valuable skills and serving in various capacities, including in government," he said on Saturday (Jan 31).

"True cohesion is achieved when every individual feels valued and empowered to contribute to the progress of this state.

"We must reject hatred and intolerance while nurturing empathy and mutual understanding", he said, noting that Melaka's strength has always laid in its diversity.

Ab Rauf said nearly 50,000 devotees are expected to take part in this year's Thaipusam celebrations, with Sri Subramaniar Temple in Batu Berendam here remaining the main focal point, alongside celebrations at temples in Jasin and Alor Gajah.

He also said Hindu civil servants in Melaka would be allowed to take time off on Monday (Feb 2) to participate in religious observances.
