KUALA LUMPUR: A whopping 7,000 advocacy notices were issued to errant road users in the city for the past two days.
The warnings were issued during the Compliance of Law operation, codenamed Ops PUU.
Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said notices were issued on Sunday (Sept 21) and Monday (Sept 22).
"Traffic obstruction remains the most committed offence with 2,879 notices issued, followed by failure to abide by traffic signages (1,692), not following pedestrian walkways (780), fancy number plates (687), not wearing helmets (336), illegal modification of motorcycles (162), stopping beyond the white line (181) and not wearing seat belts (81)," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 23).
Car drivers were issued with the most notices, with 3,235 warnings issued, he said.
"The other high number of road users given warnings is pedestrians (780)," he added.
So far, 42,289 notices have been issued from Sept 6 to 22, DCP Mohamed Usuf said.
He reminded the public to abide by traffic rules and regulations.
"The operation focuses on education, community engagement, easing congestion caused by errant road users, and crime prevention efforts.
"The operation is designed to instil long-term awareness about the importance of road safety," he said.
It was reported in the initial stage, the operation focused on high-traffic zones in the city centre, including Jalan Loke Yew, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Tun Razak, and several other hotspots under the jurisdiction of KL police.
The advocacy operation will be conducted until an unspecified date.
Once it (advocacy) ends, strict enforcement will be imposed.
The operation was started on Sept 6.
