Nearly 12,000 slapped with traffic warnings

KUALA LUMPUR: Pedestrians who did not use zebra crossings or overhead bridges were among the close to 12,000 traffic offenders who were issued notices since Sept 6, says Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus.

The Kuala Lumpur police chief said the authorities issued 11,984 notices to both pedestrians and motorists between Sept 6 and Sept 12 during the operation codenamed Ops PUU.

Those who flouted traffic laws were given the notices and advised to abide by the law.

“The operation focused on education, community engagement, easing congestion caused by errant road users and crime prevention efforts,” he told reporters late Friday night.

“The operation is designed to instil long-term awareness about the importance of road safety,” said Comm Fadil after leading the KL police in Ops PUU in the Bukit Bintang area.

Besides pedestrians not using zebra crossings or overhead bridges, other common offences include motorists who obstruct traffic flow and stopping beyond the white line at traffic lights, he said.

“We will also focus on those who ignore traffic lights, motorcyclists riding without helmets, and motorcycles fitted with illegal exhausts and accessories,” he added.

In the initial stage, Comm Fadil said the operation focused on high-traffic zones in the city centre, including Jalan Loke Yew, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Tun Razak under the jurisdiction of KL police.
