KUALA LUMPUR: Close to 12,000 advocacy notices to traffic offenders since the start of the Compliance of Law operation on Sept 6, says Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus.
The Kuala Lumpur police chief said the police have 11,984 warning notices to errant road users between Sept 6 and 12 during the operation codenamed Ops PUU.
"The operation focuses on education, community engagement, easing congestion caused by errant road users, and crime prevention efforts.
"The operation is designed to instil long-term awareness about the importance of road safety,” he told reporters late Friday (Sept 12) night.
Among the common offences targeted were pedestrians not using zebra crossings or overhead bridges, obstructing traffic flow and stopping beyond the white line at traffic lights.
"We will also focus on those who ignore traffic lights, motorcyclists riding without helmets, and motorcycles fitted with illegal exhausts and accessories," Comm Fadzil added.
Comm Fadli said that the initial stage of the operation focused on high-traffic zones in the city centre, including Jalan Loke Yew, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Tun Razak, and several other hotspots under the jurisdiction of KL police.
"However, we will expand it to the whole of Kuala Lumpur.
"The advocacy operation will be conducted until an unspecified date. Once it (advocacy) ends, we will impose strict enforcement," he said.
The awareness of the importance of adhering to the laws would be spread to schools with the cooperation of other agencies.
"Our goal is to elevate society to become a law-abiding one," said Comm Fadzil.
Comm Fadil said action would be taken on serious offences, such as driving or riding without a license, during the advocacy campaign.
"Stern and prompt action will be taken against blatant offences even during the advocacy campaign," he added.
Comm Fadzil said the operation involved full manpower from the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, with support from other police units, the Road Transport Department, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Environment Department.
On Friday night, Comm Fadil led the KL police in Ops PUU in the Bukit Bintang area.
Those who flout traffic laws were issued advocacy notices and advised to comply with the laws.
