Traffic obstruction tops list of offences detected in advocacy ops

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic obstruction tops the list for the most offences detected over the past two days of the Compliance with the Law operation in the city.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said a total of 6,684 advocacy notices were issued on Sunday (Sept 14) and Monday (Sept 15) during the operation codenamed Ops PUU.

"Of the total, traffic obstruction heads the list with 3,134 notices, followed by disobeying traffic signage (494), fancy number plates (411), stopping in the yellow box (380), not wearing seatbelts (328) and not wearing helmets (305).

"The remaining offences include no side mirrors, no road tax and worn out tyres," he said in a statement Tuesday (Sept 16).

In terms of advocacy notices issued to road users, Comm Fadil said 3,132 notices were issued to motorcycle riders, car drivers (2,813), van drivers (120), lorry drivers (103), taxi drivers (182) and pedestrians (334).

"The operation focuses on education, community engagement, easing congestion caused by errant road users, and crime prevention efforts.

"The operation is designed to instil long-term awareness about the importance of road safety," he said.

In the initial stage, Comm Fadil said the operation focused on high-traffic zones in the city centre, including Jalan Loke Yew, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Tun Razak, and several other hotspots under the jurisdiction of KL police.

"However, we will expand it to the whole of Kuala Lumpur.

"The advocacy operation will be conducted until an unspecified date. Once it (advocacy) ends, we will impose strict enforcement," he added.

The operation began on Sept 6, Comm Fadil said,

"We will conduct the operation until a specified date that will be announced later," he said.
