Pre-emptive action needed to block entry of synthetic opioid into Sabah, says assemblyman

KOTA KINABALU: Security forces in Sabah must prevent the entry of a potent synthetic opioid known as the "blackout" or "zombie" drug, says Kuamut assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah.

In a statement on Friday (Auf 21), Masiung highlighted reports confirming that the illegal substance, up to 100 times stronger than morphine, has already entered Malaysia's black market.

"Although there are no reports of it entering Sabah yet, authorities must take preventive measures now."

Masiung said.

According to the National Anti-Drug Agency, the liquid synthetic drug can be laced into vape juice, food, drinks, or unlit cigarettes.

The substance attacks the brain and nervous system, leading to high dosage levels that cause intense intoxication, memory loss, and severe unconsciousness.

Other harmful ingredients, such as ketamine and psychotropic poisons, pose critical risks to a user's physical health.
