Freedom of expression no excuse to insult royal institutions, says Sabah activist

KOTA KINABALU: Freedom of expression must not be misused to insult the royal institution or the state monarchy, says Sabah community activist Mohd Zaki Susanto.

Responding to recent social media attacks targeting the Sabah Governor, Mohd Zaki stressed that the office of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri (TYT) and Istana Seri Kinabalu are vital constitutional pillars that safeguard state stability.

"Democracy allows public debate, but such freedoms must be exercised with civility and regard for constitutional institutions," he said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 20).

The former police officer reminded the public that the TYT serves as the constitutional Head of State and a unifying symbol for Sabah's diverse population.

He cautioned against viewing former political figures through a partisan lens once appointed to the constitutional role, urging people to voice disagreements through proper legal channels rather than online abuse.

"Loyalty to the King and Nation, as stated in the Rukun Negara, should not just be a slogan, but reflected in our conduct and speech," he said, adding that while constructive criticism is welcome, personal insults have no place in society.
