KUCHING: Hazy conditions in Sarawak are expected to persist over the coming days, driven by transboundary smoke from regional biomass burning, says the state Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB).

As of 12pm on Thursday (Aug 20), six areas across Sarawak recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) levels between 125 and 191. Serian logged the highest readings at 191, closely followed by Kuching (188) and Sri Aman (178).

Data from the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) revealed a massive disparity in fire activity, detecting 7,286 hotspots in Kalimantan between Aug 1 and 19, compared to just 148 in Sarawak over the same period.

"ASMC observed moderate to dense transboundary smoke in West Kalimantan drifting northwards into parts of western Sarawak," the board said in a statement on Thursday.

"The hotspot and haze situation may escalate in fire-prone areas experiencing prolonged dry conditions, with a heightened risk of transboundary haze," it added.

The board advised the public to stay hydrated, limit outdoor exposure, and wear face masks when outside.

It also issued a stern warning against open burning during the dry spell. Offenders face fines up to RM100,000, up to five years in prison, or both under the Natural Resources and Environment Ordinance.
