QuickCheck: Did an MP's vehicle catch fire on the East Coast Highway 2?


A VIDEO circulating on Facebook shows a burning multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) beside a highway.

The fire grows steadily until it engulfs the vehicle.

The caption accompanying the video claims that the MPV, belonging to "YB Ustaz Wan Hassan" (Dungun Member of Parliament Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli) caught fire while he was travelling on the East Coast Highway 2 on Monday (Sept 1).

Did this happen as claimed?

TRUE

According to a Bernama report, Wan Hassan's MPV caught fire at KM330 of the highway bound for Kuala Terengganu.

Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department Zone 2 head Rohaya Jamil said the department was alerted at 12.47pm, and a team from the Kerteh station rushed to the scene.

"Upon arrival, the team found (the MPV) on fire and almost 95% destroyed.

"However, the MP and his wife, who were on their way back to Dungun from Kuantan, Pahang, managed to get out of the vehicle safely," Rohaya said when contacted.

The fire was brought under control at 1.17pm and its cause is still being investigated.
