GOING on a holiday means an opportunity to relax and unwind.

For a group of holidaymakers, however, the trip turned into quite a traumatic experience when the bus they were on caught fire.

Did a bus really catch fire on the North-South Expressway near Yong Peng?

Verdict:

TRUE

Fifteen people escaped unhurt after the tour bus they were on caught fire while travelling on the North-South Expressway near Yong Peng.

Yong Peng Fire and Rescue station chief operation commander Muhammad Amier Syah Hamzah said they received a distress call about the incident at 1.37pm on Tuesday (Sept 15).

He said a team of nine firefighters from the Yong Peng station arrived at the scene at 2.06pm, about 31km from the station.

"When we arrived, we found that a tour bus had caught fire while travelling northbound.

"The 14 passengers and the driver managed to get out of the bus before we arrived," he said.

Muhammad Amier Syah added that the fire destroyed about 80% of the bus.

He said firefighters used one hose line from the fire tender to put out the blaze.

"The fire was completely extinguished and the area was checked to ensure it was safe," he said.

The operation ended at 2.48pm, with the firefighters and fire engine returning to the Yong Peng station.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
