WHILE the authorities are engaged in ongoing efforts to crackdown on "Mat Rempit", videos of motorcyclists racing and performing dangerous stunts on the road still go viral on social media.

One such video making the rounds shows a motorcyclist performing a wheelie while ferrying his wife and child. Comments on the video claim that the footage was captured along the Darul Aman Highway near Alor Setar.

Kota Setar OCPD Asst Comm Syed Basri Syed Ali confirmed the incident, telling Bernama that a police officer had lodged a report after detecting a 17-second video uploaded on social media showing a man riding a motorcycle and lifting the front wheel of the ground while carrying two passengers, a woman and a four-year-old child, along the Darul Aman Highway near Dataran Bandar.

He said a 26-year-old factory operator had been arrested at the Kota Setar district police headquarters traffic police compound at about 3.40pm Wednesday (July 22).

"Following the police report, the man was detained to help in investigations, which found that the incident took place on March 28 when the suspect was on his way out for dinner with his family.

"During the stunt, his 25-year-old wife and their four-year-old daughter were also on the motorcycle," he told Bernama Wednesday.

ACP Syed Basri added that the man had been remanded for one day and was expected to be released on bail Thursday (July 23), while the case was being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. - Bernama
