For many people, Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be in My Heart” means one thing: Tarzan.
More specifically, it means Kala, Tarzan’s adoptive gorilla mother, singing to a frightened baby while audiences suddenly discover there is something in their eye. Dust. Definitely dust.
But a popular claim says Collins wrote the 1999 Disney song as a bedtime lullaby for his daughter. Is this true?

Disney approached Collins in 1995 to write songs for its animated film Tarzan, which was released in 1999.
He went on to write or co-write every song on the soundtrack, drawing on the story’s themes of identity, belonging and family.
Among them was “You’ll Be in My Heart”, which Collins wrote as a lullaby for his daughter, Lily Collins.
The song was also a natural fit for Tarzan, becoming the emotional centrepiece of the film as Kala promises to protect the infant she had chosen to raise.
The lyrics—“Come stop your crying, it will be all right”—hardly needed a major rewrite. They work just as well for a parent soothing a child at bedtime as they do for a gorilla mother rescuing a human baby after a jungle tragedy involving leopards and an impressively bad day.
Collins later said the song was truly for Lily, even though, as he put it, it ended up being “an ape singing it to a baby boy”.
Lily has also confirmed the story, describing the song as especially meaningful because she and her father grew up sharing Disney films and programmes together.
