So when a photo of simple sandwiches served to an on-call doctor recently went viral, it sparked questions about whether doctors were served meagre meals throughout their duties.

According to the Penang Health Department, the now-viral image was only a light afternoon snack and one of the four meals served to on-call medical officers.
Its director, Dr Zulhizzam Abdullah, said the department and Bukit Mertajam Hospital also take note of public feedback regarding the meals prepared for on-call medical officers.
He added that the meals are prepared by the Bukit Mertajam Hospital’s dietetic and food service department.
“We understand that the image may have generated different perceptions if not seen in the full context of the meals prepared.
“The Penang Health Department and Bukit Mertajam Hospital appreciate all views, and will continue ensuring the wellbeing of staff on duty, in accordance with the enforced circulars,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 15).
