A SPONTANEOUS weekend escape after months of back-to-back meetings. Dinner with parents on a Friday night.

Taking the family on that long-promised holiday. Finally treating yourself to that decadent dessert you have been wanting to indulge in for a while.

These experiences may look different for everyone, but they reflect a broader shift in how Malaysians define a life well lived. As lifestyles evolve, so do expectations of the financial tools that support the moments that matter.

Recognising these changing priorities, Bank Rakyat recently introduced its new World Mastercard Credit Card-i, a fully Shariah-compliant credit card designed to complement the way modern Malaysians live, work and travel.

Keeping pace with changing times

For consumers today, owning a credit card is no longer simply about making purchases, but about getting greater value from the experiences and necessities that already form part of everyday life.

Bank Rakyat Group Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Shahril Mohd Shariff says this shift has been years in the making.

“Over the past two decades, consumer behaviour has evolved significantly,” he notes, adding that the trend is driven by digitalisation, greater financial awareness and changing lifestyle expectations.

Previous generations, he observes, often associated success with ownership, but today’s consumers increasingly place greater value on experiences that enrich their lives.

“Modern Malaysians today place greater emphasis on experiences, flexibility, convenience and personalisation compared to a decade ago.”

Ahmad Shahril adds that for many, priorities have increasingly shifted towards travel, wellness, family experiences, and achieving a healthier work-life balance.

“Even among financially comfortable consumers, spending behaviour today is increasingly driven by value consciousness and lifestyle relevance rather than necessity,” he shares.

Built around evolving needs

These expectations, he explains, formed the foundation for Bank Rakyat’s World Mastercard Credit Card-i.

This Shariah-compliant premium solution bridges the gap between everyday spending and everyday needs by offering rewards across multiple touchpoints, including travel, fine dining, shopping and daily essentials. Rather than focusing solely on individual features, the bank looked at how people’s lifestyles have evolved and where financial products could add meaningful value.

The data reflects these changing habits.

The Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2024 found that dining and accommodation accounted for 17% of household spending, followed by food at 15.7% and transport at 11%.

Travel, too, has become more than an occasional indulgence. In 2025 alone, Malaysians spent RM61.4bil on international travel and RM121bil on domestic trips. With these consumer trends in mind, the World Mastercard Credit Card-i was designed around the experiences Malaysians increasingly choose to invest in.

Whether it is booking a holiday, enjoying a meal out or making everyday purchases, cardholders receive a 5% rebate (capped at RM1,500 per annum) on airline tickets, travel packages, hotel stays and dining.

Overseas spending is rewarded with enhanced points, giving card holders more value when travelling internationally.

There are also 10X Rakyat Rewards points for every RM10 spent overseas and 2X points for every RM10 spent domestically.

In addition to everyday spending and rewards, the World Mastercard Credit Card-i also opens the door to Mastercard World Privileges.

Cardholders gain access to travel assistance, hotel perks, golf privileges, and six complimentary visits annually to Mastercard-affiliated airport lounges worldwide.

More than a payment solution

These shifting consumer habits have fundamentally reshaped what consumers look for from the brands they engage with, particularly financial institutions, which are increasingly expected to play a role beyond simply providing financial services.

For Bank Rakyat, this means supporting customers’ financial well-being, lifestyle aspirations and long-term resilience through relevant and accessible solutions.

As Ahmad Shahril notes, many customers now look for banking solutions that move with them, offering convenience, recognition and enhanced experiences such as global acceptance, travel rewards, airport privileges and added protection.

With travel cashback, no hidden foreign exchange fees and a Shariah-compliant framework, the World Mastercard Credit Card-i supports these modern-day aspirations.

“More than just a payment tool, the card is designed to complement a more refined lifestyle by helping customers derive greater value, recognition and relevance from the spending they are already making, in a way that is both seamless and purposeful,” he adds.

Created for everyone

The World Mastercard Credit Card-i is part and parcel of Bank Rakyat’s broader strategy of digital transformation, expanding financial services and customer-centric innovation.

“It is not innovation for the sake of change, but a commitment to improving how customers manage, spend and interact with their finances in ways that genuinely matter to them,” says Ahmad Shahril, reflecting on the bank’s latest product.

“At its core, it is about creating financial solutions that feel intuitive, relevant and supportive at every stage of the customer journey, helping them make better financial decisions while enhancing their everyday lives with simplicity and purpose,” he adds.

The creation of the World Mastercard Credit Card-i is also guided by the bank’s “Untuk Semua” philosophy, which places inclusivity at the heart of its product development.

“Ultimately, it reflects our commitment to serve Malaysians from all walks of life with relevance and purpose,” he says.

For Bank Rakyat, the World Mastercard Credit Card-i represents this broader ambition, not simply to facilitate payments, but to support the aspirations and financial needs that shape today’s living.

As Ahmad Shahril puts it: “Bank Rakyat’s role is evolving beyond being a financial service provider to becoming a trusted financial partner in customers’ everyday lives.”
