Don't abuse freedom of speech by stirring up 3R issues, says Ramanan

PETALING JAYA: The government will take firm action against any individual who deliberately threatens the peace and welfare of the people, particularly on issues related to religion, race and royalty (3R).

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan (pic) said that statements, social media posts and comments intended to incite racial sentiments are increasing and could undermine the country's harmony and unity.

"The Federal Constitution guarantees the rights of the people while recognising the unique historical and social framework of this country.

"The principles of constitutional supremacy and the rule of law ensure that the nation remains peaceful, harmonious, and stable; therefore, freedom of speech should not be misused to incite or divide society," he said in a statement on Monday (March 9).

He added that the situation is concerning as the harmony among Malaysians is being threatened and turned into a tool for personal political gain.

Ramanan added that Malaysians have long demonstrated that any differences in background are not a barrier to peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, which has allowed the country to advance and develop over the decades.

"Malaysia is a country made up of diverse ethnic groups, including Malays, Chinese, Indians, Iban and Kadazan; the people should not be presented with content that is racially charged or extremist.

"When there are no major issues to challenge the government's achievements, some parties, driven by rewards or incentives, act as agents provocateur to stir racial sentiments, provoke incidents and spread hate while pursuing the agendas of specific groups," he said.

The Sungai Buloh MP added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's leadership had demonstrated stable policies, the courage to implement reforms and the public's trust.

This could be seen through the initiatives such as the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) and the Budi95 petrol initiatives, he said.

"Domestically, the economy continues to be strengthened through quality investments, job creation and an inclusive growth agenda.

"At the same time, Malaysia's international relations are increasingly robust, opening more opportunities for strategic investments and boosting global confidence in the country.

"Malaysia also recorded a record-high approved investment of RM426.7bil, creating 244,902 quality job opportunities and these achievements benefit the people directly," he said.
