Cops seize RM5mil in equipment at illegal plastic processing plant in Sungkai

IPOH: Police seized over RM5mil worth of plastic processing equipment and materials during a raid on an illegal plastic processing operation in Sungkai on Feb 25.

General Operations Force Northern Brigade commander SAC Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said the operation, named "Op Taring Alpha 5", was jointly carried out with the Perak Environment Department and the Batang Padang District Council.

He said police arrested one woman in her 30s, believed to be a clerk, and 11 Bangladeshi men aged between 23 and 55, believed to be workers at the premises.

"Multiple machines operating without Environment Department approval, along with large piles of processed and unprocessed plastic waste were seized.

"The illegal facility had reportedly been running for over six years, sourcing waste from the Klang Valley," he said in a statement on Friday (Feb 27).

SAC Balveer Singh said the case has been handed over to the Perak Environment Department under Section 38(1)(a) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

The 11 Bangladeshi nationals face investigation under Section 39(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

He warned that enforcement action would continue against anyone involved in unlicensed plastic processing, highlighting serious environmental and public safety risks.
