Bridge collapse traps over 100 in Sungkai

TANJUNG MALIM: More than 100 people are trapped after a bridge on the main access road to three recreational and camping centres in Sungkai collapsed this morning.

Assistant Director of Operations for the Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, said they received information about the incident at 10.46am.

A team from the Bidor Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) rushed to the scene.

"The bridge collapse occurred on the main access road to Hot Spring Felda Sungai Klah, Kampung Tisong, and Buyong Mas Sanctuary Camp Site, cutting off entry and exit routes.

"JBPM is working with other agencies to evacuate the victims using alternative routes today, and efforts are ongoing," he said.

Sabarodzi said that approximately 45 people from 17 families, including 39 adults and 16 children, are stranded at Hot Spring Sungai Klah, along with residents from Kampung Orang Asli Tisong.

He added that about 81 students from Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah, attending a course at Buyong Mas Sanctuary Camp Site, are also trapped, along with 10 staff members.

Agencies involved include the Batang Padang District Office, police, and the Sungkai Civil Defence Force (APM).
