SHAH ALAM: The recent incident involving the use of flares, allegedly by supporters of Selangor FC on Sunday at the Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge, has drawn the ire of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah (pic).
As the patron of Selangor FC, His Royal Highness expressed deep regret and disappointment over the incident.
Sultan Sharafuddin also voiced his displeasure over gangsterism and hooliganism among local football supporters, particularly those backing Selangor FC.
“His Royal Highness wants the police to identify the masterminds behind the incident.
“If found guilty, those involved should be punished with the maximum sentence permitted by law.
“This is meant to serve as a lesson to other Selangor FC supporters so that similar incidents do not recur,” read a statement issued by Istana Alam Shah yesterday.
His Royal Highness also suggested that Selangor FC supporters found guilty of causing disturbances should be banned from entering stadiums for any matches involving the team.
Sultan Sharafuddin called on all Selangor FC supporters to exercise self-control and uphold the good name of the team and the state.
Yesterday, 33 Selangor FC supporters were remanded to assist in investigations into the disturbance at the bridge in Terengganu on Sunday.
The incident, which occurred at about 6.30pm, took place before the Super League match between Terengganu FC and Selangor FC at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Kuala Nerus on Sunday night.
Kuala Terengganu district police chief Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said those remanded were among about 400 supporters detained and taken to the police headquarters yesterday for urine tests.
Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said those involved in the incident would not be spared by the law if found guilty of an offence.
“As long as the matter is under investigation, no one will be spared if an offence is proven,” he told a press conference yesterday.
He added that the ministry would leave the matter entirely to the authorities to carry out their investigations.
