Driver in fatal Jalan Lembah Permai crash released on bail

GEORGE TOWN: The driver of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) who was arrested over an alleged drink-driving incident that killed a pedestrian has been released on bail.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the 51-year-old foreign national was bailed out by his Malaysian wife.

“He has been bailed out by his wife,” he said briefly in a message to reporters on Monday (Jan 5).

Earlier, it was reported that a 67-year-old woman was killed after being struck by an SUV at Jalan Lembah Permai on Sunday night.

The incident occurred at about 11.30pm when the victim was crossing the road and was hit by the SUV.

Initial investigations found that the vehicle, driven by the 51-year-old foreign national who was travelling from Mount Erskine Road towards Tanjung Bunga Road, struck the pedestrian as she was crossing the road from left to right.

The impact threw the victim onto the roadway, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

An alcohol screening test conducted on the driver indicated that he is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol beyond the permitted limit.

The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
