GEORGE TOWN: Police confirmed that a 36-year-old woman, seen in a viral video of an accident involving her multi-purpose vehicle and two motorcycles along Jalan Macalister here, was suffering from a heart attack, which ultimately caused the accident.
Northeast OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the two motorcycles were parked by the roadside outside a food court when the incident occurred.
"We were made aware of the viral video on Thursday (Aug 13), which showed the road accident attracting public attention.
"The woman driving the multi-purpose vehicle died while receiving treatment at Penang Hospital.
"She is believed to have suffered a heart attack while driving, which resulted in the accident," he said in a press statement.
He said a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
ACP Abdul Rozak also confirmed that there were no riders on the motorcycles during the time of the incident on Thursday afternoon.
"A police report was lodged on Thursday regarding the incident as well.
"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving," he said.
Earlier, a 1.52-second video made the rounds on social media, showing the car knocking into parked motorcycles with a crowd gathering around trying to help.
A man was also seen giving the woman cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
