Penang cops bust love scam syndicate in Batu Feringghi, nab 20 foreigners


GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested 20 foreign men suspected of being involved in an online love scam syndicate after raiding a house in Batu Ferringhi.

Northeast OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the suspects, aged from 19 to 41, were arrested in the 7.05pm raid on Sunday (Aug 23) conducted by a team from the Commercial Crime Investigation Division, together with personnel from the Batu Ferringhi police station.

He said that initial investigations found that the syndicate targeted victims from China by using the Telegram application to carry out online scams.

"We also seized several items, including mobile phones, laptops, notebooks and telecommunications equipment," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 24) night.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 420/120B of the Penal Code and that all the suspects have been remanded for four days until Thursday (Aug 27) for further investigation – Bernama
