Factory worker killed, seven injured in Mount Erskine van crash

GEORGE TOWN: A factory worker died and seven others, including the van driver, were seriously injured in a crash on Jalan Mount Erskine.

The van, driven by a man and carrying seven female workers, crashed at about 5.59am on Monday (Dec 1).

Firefighters arriving at the scene found four of the eight victims trapped in the wreckage.

They took about two hours to extricate the trapped victims.

Seven were rescued with injuries and a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Meanwhile, George Town OCPD ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad said investigations revealed that the 59-year-old van driver had lost control of the vehicle and collided with the retention wall on the right beside the road.

He said that the driver was heading from Teluk Bahang to Bayan Lepas when the accident happened.

"Following the accident, a 50-year-old factory died on the spot. The post-mortem found that the deceased had died from head injuries. The van driver and six other female passengers aged between 21 to 53 years old all suffered injuries," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
