Malaysia to reach out to US Secretary of State for help with GSF detainees

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will request United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s intervention in ensuring Malaysians detained by the Israeli regime are freed, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In an unconventional live address from his car, Anwar said he had reached out to several world leaders on the matter.

“After receiving information about 23 Malaysians detained on board the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) humanitarian mission to Gaza, I immediately called Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, and Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

“This evening, together with our Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, I will also be contacting Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Rubio. This is to seek intervention and release all those detained by Israel.

“The fault of those detained is their humanitarian concern over the people in Gaza, Palestine, who are in dire straits, hungry, weak, as well as ill, including women and children. If this cannot be carried out, then there is no value to humanity,” he said on Thursday (Oct 2).

As such, Anwar urged and prayed that the Israeli regime stop their violence and release our people while ensuring all humanitarian aid is sent immediately.

Earlier, several Malaysians have been detained by Israeli forces while participating in the GSF humanitarian mission to Gaza as of 7.50am on Thursday.

Anwar had strongly condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which carried unarmed civilians and humanitarian aid bound for Gaza.
