SUBANG JAYA: The competition for positions in the DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) at the 18th DAP National Congress will not be as intense as in previous years, says Anthony Loke.
The DAP secretary-general said this year, 70 candidates will contest for 30 seats, a smaller pool compared to previous years.
The number of candidates contesting for CEC posts varies. In the previous 2022 election, there were 93 candidates contesting for CEC posts. In the 2012 election, 68 candidates competed for the 20 available posts.
"The nomination process has closed. So, 70 candidates will be competing for 30 CEC positions. This means the contest is less intense now," he said in a press conference here on Thursday (March 6).
The DAP congress, set to be held at the Ideal Convention Centre Shah Alam (IDCC) on March 16, will feature several high-profile figures vying for leadership positions including DAP national chairman Lim Guan Eng, Gobind Singh Deo, Ramkarpal Singh, Nga Kor Ming, Chow Kon Yeow, Steven Sim and Chong Chieng Jen.
Among the prominent female candidates are Hannah Yeoh, Teresa Kok, Teo Nie Ching, Yeo Bee Yin, Young Syefura Othman, Lim Hui Ying, Vivian Wong, Wong Shu Qi and Alice Lau.
It was reported that 4,203 delegates from 1,650 branches would be eligible to vote at the congress, which is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his capacity as Pakatan Harapan chairman.
Aside from the Anwar, Amanah president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) president Datuk Ewon Benedick have also been invited to attend.
