SHAH ALAM: Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has urged politicians to anchor their debates in hard facts instead of resorting to divisive racial rhetoric.
Speaking at the close of the Selangor State Assembly sitting on Thursday (Aug 13), Amirudin emphasised that mature politics is essential to maintaining harmony in the state.
“We must also have the determination and political will to end racial and identity politics by forming a united stand to say that it has no place in Selangor today or in the future.
“We want to uphold metropolitan politics that celebrates everyone. We cannot inflame our respective voter bases merely for electoral victory—whether Malay, Chinese, or Indian.
“This is because some statements and views can become the basis for hatred. Such remarks are not limited to the Malay community; there are also words from other communities that provoke anger and reinforce ethnic divisions between us," he said.
Amirudin added that while it may seem easy to win support within one’s own community by practising identity politics, it must be remembered that Selangor is a multi-ethnic state that must engage with the outside world.
In his speech, Amirudin said Selangor was built on a spirit of togetherness and a sense of shared ownership.
