Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for five states until 11am


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across five states, effective until 11am on Friday (Aug 14).

In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire states of Perlis and Pulau Pinang. Affected areas in Kedah include Bandar Baharu, Kulim, Baling, Kuala Muda, Sik, Yan, Pendang, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar and Pokok Sena.

In Perak, severe weather is expected in Kerian, Selama, Larut Matang, Manjung and Bagan Datuk.

In the central region, the warning covers Sabak Bernam and Kuala Selangor in Selangor.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 8.00am today.
