ALOR GAJAH: A total of 1,159 police personnel were deployed throughout Melaka during the state’s 16th election nomination day on Saturday (Oct 31).
State police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the deployment involved security and traffic control at all 28 nomination centres across the state.
He said that as of 10.15 am, the entire nomination process proceeded peacefully.
"I would like to thank all parties' supporters for remaining calm and refraining from engaging in any provocation or causing disorder.
"I would also like to thank the leaders of the respective supporters' groups for successfully ensuring that their party members did not engage in any undesirable actions," he told reporters at the JAPERUN Machap Jaya Complex in Bukit Bulat here on Saturday.
He said police would continue to monitor the situation throughout the two-week campaign period.
Dzulkhairi once again advised all political parties and their supporters to conduct themselves appropriately and refrain from any actions that could disrupt public order.
"We hope the (election) process over the next two weeks will proceed peacefully until polling day on Nov 14," he said.
He added that the number of police personnel deployed would be increased to 3,452 on polling day, involving duties at voting centres and polling streams.
Of the total, about 1,500 personnel would be deployed from outside Melaka, including from the Johor, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor contingents.
Meanwhile, he said traffic conditions around the nomination centres had remained under control so far, with no serious congestion reported. – Bernama
