Zahid signals Rauf to stay as Melaka CM if BN retains state

TANJUNG BIDARA: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has signalled that Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh remains Barisan Nasional’s (BN) top choice for Melaka Chief Minister if the coalition wins the upcoming state election.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday after accompanying Ab Rauf to file his nomination papers for the Tanjung Bidara state seat, the Barisan chairman said he would formally propose Ab Rauf to stay on in the post.

"We hope to form the next government. Without pre-empting the proper processes or consent from the Yang di-Pertua, I, as Barisan chairman, will propose that Datuk Seri Rauf continues as Melaka Chief Minister, God willing," Ahmad Zahid said.

His statement offers the clearest sign yet from Barisan's top leadership that the coalition favours administrative continuity in Melaka.

While expressing confidence in public support, Ahmad Zahid emphasised that the final choice rests with the electorate.

"We leave the mandate to the voters," he said, hoping their support translates into votes on polling day.

He also called for a clean and peaceful election campaign, urging all political parties to refrain from slander and dirty tactics.
