PETALING JAYA: The 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon season is expected to start next Tuesday (Oct 27), says the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
MetMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said that the period is expected to continue until March 2027.
"During this period, winds typically blow consistently from the northeast. The initial phase of the Northeast Monsoon, from November 2026 to January 2027, is expected to bring three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain, potentially causing flooding in areas near rivers and low-lying locations.
Persistent and strong northeasterly winds may also cause rough seas and increase the risk of rising sea levels in the South China Sea. Towards the final phase of the Northeast Monsoon, from January to March 2027, rainfall is expected to decrease, particularly in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah.
"These conditions will result in hot and dry weather, with the potential for more extreme heatwaves due to the influence of the ongoing very strong (Super) El Niño phenomenon,” he said in a statement on Friday.
He also advised the public to be appropriately prepared for the monsoon period and to stay updated with the latest updates by MetMalaysia via the www.met.gov.my website, the myCuaca mobile application, its official social media channels and the MET Malaysia hotline at 1300 22 1638,” he said.
