MELAKA: Political duplicity and the pursuit of vested interests are threatening the stability of the unity government and obstructing its reform agenda, says PKR’s Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.
He accused certain parties of “playing both sides” at a time when the national leadership was working to restore public and international confidence in the administration.
“The unity government is being tested by those practising two-faced politics. There are parties openly playing both sides without any sense of shame while the leadership is rebuilding the confidence of the people and the international community in our country.
“Such political betrayal is hampering the national reform agenda,” he said in his keynote address at the PKR 2026 National Congress (AMK Congress) held at the Melaka International Trade Centre in Ayer Keroh here last night.
Also present were PKR vice-president Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa and former AMK chiefs Adam Adli Abdul Halim and Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
Muhammad Kamil said the actions of those who put political ambitions above the interests of the people and country should not be taken lightly.
Despite the alleged betrayal, he said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had continued to display magnanimity by fulfilling his responsibilities for the sake of the reform movement’s dignity and the country’s stability.
“Even as our hearts are pierced and we are stabbed – not in the back, but from the front – our Prime Minister remains magnanimous and continues to smile before the people to protect the dignity of our struggle and stability of the nation,” he said.
Muhammad Kamil said the situation should serve as a warning to all parties within the unity government not to allow political manoeuvring and personal ambitions to disrupt the reform agenda or destabilise the administration.
Earlier, Muhammad Kamil said economic figures and policy achievements will mean little politically if Malaysians could not feel its impact in their daily lives.
He said the PKR Youth Wing acknowledged that economic performance alone was insufficient to win public confidence, particularly when households continued to grapple with the cost of living.
“People may not follow economic reports or debates about the country’s fiscal position, but they know how much they have to pay for essential goods every week.
“Performance politics must be accompanied by clear explanation, policies must inspire confidence and achievements must be communicated in language the people understand,” he said
Muhammad Kamil said the government’s policies would ultimately be judged not by achievements recorded on paper but by whether they brought meaningful improvements to people’s lives.
More than 2,500 delegates and 3,000 observers are expected to attend the party’s national congress.
PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar will open the joint congresses of AMK and Wanita PKR today.
The programme will culminate with the official opening of the main congress and a policy address by Anwar, who is the PKR president.
