Pressing need to encourage young women to enter politics, says Wanita MCA chairman

KULAI: There is a pressing need to empower and encourage more young women to get involved in politics, says Wanita MCA national chairman Wong You Fong.

Wong said that the party’s women's wing would look into ways and plan suitable programmes to attract more women, especially those who were 30 and below, to join the party.

"We do not have that many young people in the women’s wing. Maybe only about 20% of them are 30 and below while the rest are older.

"As part of our rejuvenation process, we have come out with a post called U40 at the state, division and branch level.

"This post is reserved for those who are 40 years old and below. The idea is to train them and give them the opportunity to be future leaders.

"Unfortunately, we are realising that there are some branches that do not have enough people to take up this post," said Wong, who is also Johor Wanita MCA chief.

She said this to reporters after the Johor Wanita MCA annual general assembly at a restaurant here on Sunday (Aug 6).

Wong added that the women's wing would need to work hard to encourage more young women to join the party and take on larger roles.

"It is important as we need to have the next generation of leaders who are prepared to take on bigger roles in the party in the future," she said.
