EC to meet soon, application for postal votes now open

PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will meet soon to set the dates for the 15th General Election, but the online application for postal voting is now open.

Malaysians living abroad and domestic postal voters such as general election staff, police, army personnel and members of the media may apply for postal voting.

EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said the closing date for the applications will be notified later after the EC meets to determine the dates for GE15 and also the Bugaya state seat by-election in Sabah.

“The EC would like to inform everyone that applications for domestic and foreign postal votes for GE15 are now open immediately,” Ikmalrudin said.

Category 1A postal voters – the election staff, police and army personnel and media workers – can complete Form 1A and submit it to the Returning Officer’s office at each polling division.

The form can be downloaded from the EC website https://www.spr.gov.my while the office address and information of the Returning Officer are also available on the official portal, said Ikmalrudin.

Malaysians living abroad and agencies or organisations fall under Categories 1B and 1C respectively.

They can apply online for postal voting via https://myspr.spr.gov.my/login.

The Prime Minister announced yesterday that the King had given his formal consent to dissolve Parliament while the Bugaya state seat fell vacant after the death of its assemblyman in November 2020.

However, an emergency was declared in the constituency along with the parliamentary seats of Batu Sapi in Sabah and Gerik in Perak. On Oct 6, the King revoked the emergency proclamation on the three seats.
