High prices prevent some parents from opting for vaccine

PETALING JAYA: The dengue vaccine has been in the market for two years now, but many are still taking a wait-and-see approach due to the cost.

Others, however, are willing to fork out money for the jab for the sake of protection.

Teacher A. Nirmala said that while she is interested in getting her four children vaccinated against dengue, the cost is far from affordable.

“I surveyed a few places but they were charging over RM400 for two doses. It is not feasible,” she said.

“I hope the vaccine will be offered at government facilities, even if it is for a small fee.”

Nirmala added that since dengue is endemic in Malaysia, it would be helpful if the government could offer the vaccine at its facilities.

An executive, who wanted to be known only as Tarmizi, said he too would get his two children vaccinated against dengue if it could be offered at a lower price.

“I do understand that it is also expensive for the government to offer the vaccine at a highly subsidised rate.

“While some of us would like to get the vaccine, especially with dengue being a menace in our country, it is simply not affordable.

“If there are more options, especially those which are affordable, I would definitely go for it,” he added.

For content creator Sharul Nazrin, the pros of obtaining the dengue vaccine far outweigh the cost of treating his two children if they were to contract the virus.

“It would be even worse if they are warded.

“Personally, I would opt for it as I am financially able to cope,” said the 32-year-old.
