SELANGOR is preparing to host 5,000 people at a Wesak Day celebration that includes a bathing-the-Buddha ceremony involving 666 statues – linked to the launch date June 6 or 6.6.26.
The three-day event from June 5 to 7 will be held at Sugata Dharma Vihara (Dharma Light Monastery) located in Bandar Saujana Putra, Kuala Langat.
State investment, trade and mobility committee chairman and Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han said the event was aimed at promoting harmony through cultural understanding.
Held annually since 2009, this year’s theme is “Bridging Through Digital, Cultivating Wisdom Together”.
“The festival also aligns with Visit Selangor Year 2026,” he told reporters at a press conference in Shah Alam.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari is expected to launch the event on June 6.
Ng said the event commemorated Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death.
Organising committee chairman and Kajang assemblyman David Cheong Kian Young said the celebration would feature cultural, spiritual and community activities.
They include chanting and blessing sessions by Mahayana and Theravada monks, prayer wheels, Sutra copying, woodblock printing and Bodhi leaf crafting workshops.
There will also be health screenings, photography and Buddhist stamp exhibitions as well as lucky draws.
Cheong said Buddhist centres across Selangor have been invited to participate.
Ng said there would be a shuttle service from nearby parking areas, including Mahsa University.
The state government event is being co-organised with Sugata Dharma Vihara in collaboration with Malaysian Buddhist Consultative Council and supported by Malaysian Buddhist Association KL/Selangor Branch and Maha Karuna Buddhist Society.
