THE Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026 Torch Run roadshow officially began at Dataran Kemerdekaan in Shah Alam, Selangor, with Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) serving as the first host of the programme.
The event, organised at city council level, was held alongside Shah Alam Car-Free Day.
Selangor youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the torch run was not merely symbolic but carried a deeper meaning as the state prepared to host the 22nd edition of Sukma in August.
“The torch run today is not merely symbolic of the country’s biggest sporting event.
“It carries a much bigger meaning as a symbol of sportsmanship, unity and the commitment of all Selangor citizens in making Sukma and Para Sukma 2026 a success,” he said in his speech.
Mohd Najwan said the torch, which would tour various locations in Selangor, symbolised unity among the people regardless of race, religion and background.
“This spirit is our country’s main strength and forms the foundation for the success of any sporting event,” he said.
“As host of Sukma and Para Sukma 2026, the Selangor government is responsible for ensuring the games are organised systematically and successfully.
“We want to leave a positive impact on the people as well as the development of national sports,” he added.
Mohd Najwan said the state government wanted the games to be inclusive, sustainable and to reach the people.
“We want the people not only to be spectators, but also to be part of the historical journey of hosting these games,” he said.
The inaugural torch run roadshow will be carried out in collaboration with Selangor’s 12 local authorities, to reduce the financial burden on the state secretariat, he elaborated.
The roadshow will continue in several locations, including Klang on May 24, Kuala Selangor on June 6, Sabak Bernam on June 14 and Hulu Selangor on June 21.
It will also cover Selayang, Ampang Jaya, Kajang, Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya and Kuala Langat before ending in Sepang on Aug 9.
Sukma 2026 will be held from Aug 15 to 24, while Para Sukma 2026 is scheduled to take place from Sept 5 to 10.
Mohd Najwan said Sukma should also serve as a catalyst for developing young sporting talents.
“Selangor believes that today’s young athletes are important national assets who can bring Malaysia’s name to greater heights in the future.”
He said the state government was also giving special attention to sports development for persons with disabilities, through Para Sukma.
“This reflects our commitment to the principles of inclusivity and equal opportunities for all athletes,” he added.
There were also the Feel Good Run as well as Rakan Muda 3.0 run for children and adults, with participants getting commemorative medals.
