A SUMMARY of debates and proposals at the Selangor state assembly pertaining to Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's proposal to postpone the Malaysia Games 2026 (Sukma) will be presented to the Ruler.
State youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said this would be alongside the findings from the upcoming meeting with Youth and Sports Ministry on the matter.
“We take the ruler’s view seriously. We will also give space for assemblymen to air their views on Sukma,” he said, adding that the preparations for Sukma was ongoing.
“We have about three months to go before Sukma. Next is the naming of the official song and the launch of the Games mascot. However, we will put these on hold.
“There is no final decision yet, and I suggest that all preparations continue until a final announcement is made,” he said when met by reporters during the lunch break at the Selangor state assembly sitting on Tuesday (April 21).
Unlike the previous Sukma which received funding from the Federal Government, Sukma 2026 has yet to receive any funding yet.
On Monday (April 20), the Selangor Ruler proposed for the Games to be postponed until the crisis in the Middle East is over as well as until the reconstruction of the Shah Alam Stadium is fully completed.
Sukma Selangor 2026 is scheduled to take place from Aug 15 to 24.
Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari had previously saidthe biennial games would be held on a smaller scale to save on organising costs without reducing the number of sports and events contested.
It was earlier reported that Mohd Najwan, the chairman of the 22nd Sukma Implementing Committee and the Selangor 2026 Para Sukma, said the postponement of Sukma needed to be viewed comprehensively as it was a national-level sports event that was decided jointly with other states and theYouth and Sports Ministry.
He said the move was taken after the Games supreme committee took note of the global energy crisis and the global economic impact that was also being felt in this country.
