SELANGOR is looking to set up a task force with the police to address cable theft at public infrastructure sites, including facilities linked to flood mitigation works.

State infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim (pic) said the issue had become serious as stolen cables could affect the operation of pump houses during floods.

He said cable theft not only caused financial losses but could also disrupt public infrastructure when it was needed most.

“If there is no electricity, the pump houses would not be able to operate during floods,” he said.

Izham said he had discussed possible measures with police, including the setting up of a task force.

He said one case involving stolen equipment from a switch room and control room had cost about RM200,000 to replace.

“This has a major impact,” he said after making a site visit to an RM8mil flood mitigation project at Taman Batu Tiga in Shah Alam.

Izham said Tenaga Nasional Bhd had informed him that cable losses last year amounted to more than RM30mil.
