SARAWAK youth are being asked to contribute to the nation after completing their studies abroad.

“I wish to remind you to never forget your roots,” HCK Capital Group company secretary Datin Adeline Hii told students at SMK Sacred Heart’s prize-giving day in Sibu.

“It’s wonderful to pursue education overseas, to explore and experience the world – but remember, our education means the most when we bring that knowledge and experience back home to make a difference.

“Let’s not be part of the brain drain that siphons away talent and potential to contribute to our own community and country,” said Adeline, daughter of HCK group founder and executive chairman Tan Sri Clement Hii.

Citing her own journey, chartered accountant Adeline, who hails from Sibu, said after completing her studies in Brisbane, Australia, she and her husband Dr Dennis Ling, who has a doctorate in mechanical engineering, uprooted and returned to Kuala Lumpur about 12 years ago to help her father with his business.

She also reminded the students to stay humble and resilient.

“There are many people we may encounter without realising that they can have a direct or indirect influence on us.

“So, stay humble with everyone you meet, persevere, keep striving and never give up.

“I believe these are the key contributors to success – not just for me, but for everyone.”

Encouraging students to explore their interests and discover their strengths, she said: “Go out and explore the world. Discover what you like and dislike, find out what you are best at and where your talents lie.”

She also advised students to seek guidance from teachers, peers and parents when deciding on their future careers, and to take on their ambitions with confidence.

SMK Sacred Heart principal David Teo thanked Clement for his generous contributions to the school over the past 22 years.

Teo attributed the school’s success to students’ hard work and perseverance, the continuous dedication of teachers, and strong partnership of the parents, community and private sector.

At the ceremony, a total of 297 students and teachers received awards for their achievements.
